Obituary: Rudolph “Red” Cominski, 95, passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2010, at the Eastern Star Home, with his loving family at his side. He was born on February 25, 1915, in Rome, the son of Stanley and Paula Kapinos Kaminski. Red was a graduate of Rome Free Academy, the Class of 1933.
He worked for Rome Strip Steele for a while then worked for Rome Cable Corporation.
Red served four years in the United States Navy from 1935-1939.
He re-enlisted on June 16, 1942, serving in Pier 92, New York City, Alameda, California, Seattle, Washington, Advanced Diesel School, St. Louis, Missouri, Aleutian Islands, Pearl Harbor, Midway, Japan. His assignments were on the USS Herold Auxiliary, Mine Sweeper and the USS Starlet SS-392 Submarine, as a Machinist Mate. Red’s honors include the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon with Five Battle Stars, Submarine Combat Pin with three stars, American Theatre Operations Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal. He returned to Rome, and continued to work at Rome Cable Corporation until his retirement at the age of sixty-two.
Red enjoyed fishing and deer hunting at his camp on the St. Lawrence.
Red married his wife, Genevieve, March 21, 1958, a blessed union of fifty-two years.
Surviving besides his wife, Genevieve; are children, Chester and his wife, Lou Ann Swire, of Rome, Alicia Swierczewski Hiffa, of New Hartford, Stephen Swerske, of Arkansas; grandchildren, Brian (Deb) Swerske, FL, Todd (Deb) Swerske, TN, Gary Swerske, TX, Mark Swire, New York Mills, Michelle (Kyle) Castle, Oneida; great-grandchildren, Zed and Gaby Swerske, Madison and Matthew Castle; a brother, Stanley Kaminski; and a niece, Paula. Red was predeceased by two brothers, Michael and Adolf; a grandson, Kevin Swire and a son-in-law, Richard “Dick” Hiffa.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the nurses and staff at the Eastern Star Home for their excellent care of Rudy, and the kindness and compassion shown to his family.
