Obituary: Jack F. Converse, Sr., 81, of Rome, passed away on Friday, March 5, 2010, at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Hospital, with his family, whom he dearly loved, at his side. He was born to Lawrence Converse and Florence Bronson on October 17, 1928, in the Rome area. He attended Rome area schools. He married Mable Golden on October 14, 1950, in the First Presbyterian Church, Rome, where the Rev. Percy Radford officiated. They celebrated fifty-nine wonderful years together.
Jack worked most of his life at Griffiss Air Force Base, retiring in 1988 after thirty years of service.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Holland Patent, where he participated in the Church Choir, the Worship Committee, the Church Directory Committee, and he was a Deacon and an Elder. Jack was also a member of the Masons of Rome, the New Horizon Barbershop Chorus of New Hartford, and the Lion’s Club of Holland Patent.
Jack enjoyed square dancing, ballroom dancing, hunting, fishing at the children’s camp on Fourth Lake, and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved attending his children’s and grandchildren’s field hockey, football, basketball, lacrosse, and baseball games.
Surviving besides his loving wife, Mable; are one son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Cheri (Brown) Converse, Jr., of Brewster, NY; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jill and Gary Seelman, of Holland Patent, and Tammy and Donny Crego, Jr., of Barneveld; six grandchildren, Brandon Converse, twins Blake and Bethany Converse, Nicole Seelman, Jessica (Seelman) Koenig and her husband, Justin, and Cody Crego; two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Jaxon Koenig; a brother, Richard Converse; five sisters and a brother-in-law, Thelma and Simon Lehman, Bette Berndt, Myrt Stellwagon, Virginia Worden, and his twin, Isabelle Walters; and several nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his mother and father, Lawrence and Florence Converse; a daughter, Diane Converse; eight brothers, George, Chester, Lawrence, Jr., Leonard, Theodore, Raymond, Leo, and Carl Converse; eight sisters-in-law, Wanda, Ginger, Ruth, Christ, Pat, Jean, Theresa, and Karla Converse.
Jack’s family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Jerry Sloan and the wonderful staff of nurses at his office, the nurses of the Critical Care Unit, the Second Floor, and the Fourth Floor at Faxton-St. Luke’s Hospital, Linda Ferris at Pulmonary Rehab at Rome Memorial Hospital, and especially Cindy Falk, Manager of American Home Patient in Marcy, for the kindness and compassion shown to him.
Services: Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at 11:00 AM at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, where the Rev. Susan Solomon will officiate. Interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in the spring. Family and friends are invited and may call on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Holland Patent where the Rev. Susan Poole will officiate at the convenience of the family. Contributions may be made in Jack’s memory to the First Presbyterian Church of Holland Patent or the Floyd Volunteer Fire Department.
